Wednesday, April 23, 2008. Updated: Thursday, May 8, 2008.
The release of SP3 has been
released as of May 6, 2008; just one week after
being delayed due to a compatibility
issue with Microsoft's Dynamic Retail Management
System.
This is intended for Microsoft Windows
XP (not Vista)
users. We request
that people do not send this message by email, but
instead refer your friends to

As I have often mentioned,
Microsoft releases updates and patches for Windows
every Tuesday evening. Next week, on Tuesday, April
29, 2008, Microsoft
will release the third Service Pack (or SP3
for short) for the Windows XP operating system.
Some facts about Windows
XP
Service Pack 3 (SP3):
- Update applies to users of
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft
Windows XP Media Center Edition, Microsoft
Windows XP Professional, and Microsoft Windows
XP Tablet PC Edition,
- Your computer will begin downloading it
automatically between late Tuesday evening on
April 29, or early Wednesday morning April 30.
If your computer is off at that time, the
download will auto-start next time your computer
connects to the Internet. Little or no
action is required on your part. During this download Internet access
may seem slower than usual.
- SP3 is typically 70 MB in size.
Download size depends on the specific needs of
your computer.
- Download times: Broadband users (Cable, DSL, Satellite,
or Fiber Optic) will take less than 5 minutes, while dial-up users may take up
to 3 hours.
Alternately, you can order a copy of
Microsoft
Windows XP SP3 on CD from Skylark NetWorks
(Saunders Tech).- During the download, a small Windows Update icon,
like the one shown at right, will appear in the
Notification area in the lower right hand corner of
the screen (to the left of the time/clock).
- If you computer
notifies you that it is “Installing Updates” do not
interrupt or attempt to shut off your computer.
- If you are shutting off your computer, and your
computer notifies you that it is “Installing
Updates”, leave it alone, and don’t worry if it
seems to be taking too long to shut down. Your computer will shut
down when it is finished.
- If you frequently leave your computer on overnight
you might not notice any of the activity mentioned
in this message. Don’t worry. Your computer
automatically downloaded and installed SP3. If so, you may notice the
previously mentioned icon at the lower right of your screen.
Pointing at it may show a message indicating that
‘Updates were installed’.
I hope you find this
information useful. I wanted you to know
what to expect when you turn on or shut down your
computer, for the first time, on or after Wednesday,
April 29-30.
If you have any questions feel
free to contact Skylark NetWorks (formerly Saunders Tech) using the email form at right.
